Is it Confidence or Arrogance?
Confidence is a great asset to have in life. It helps us achieve our goals, build relationships, and be successful. But sometimes when we don’t FEEL confident, we try to fake it. This can lead to us over shooting and coming across arrogant instead. Here’s a few key tips to make sure you come across thoughtful, engaged, and confident!
Arrogance is defined as an exaggerated sense of importance or abilities. People who are arrogant usually try to make others feel small or inferior. This behavior is usually a sign that someone is overcompensating because they feel insecure. Confidence on the other hand, is a general sense of belief in your skills and ability.
To be confident without seeming arrogant, try these four tips:
Become a great listener: When you truly listen, you can better understand what makes people tick. Then you can formulate a more authentic response and show real engagement. Focus on being where your feet are... present in the moment.
Open a dialogue and ask others to share their opinions: Instead of always looking for people to agree with you, open up a conversation and see situations from someone else's perspective. The more information you have, the better decisions you can make.
Collaborate and celebrate with others: Instead of trying to be right, acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of others. A confident person doesn’t need their ego stroked - they care about “getting it right,” not being right.
Remember who you are: Look for past examples of times in your life when you overcame tough challenges. You need to remember just how freaking resilient you are. If you’ve made it this far… what's another challenge?
I always say, “Confidence is rooted in truth and proof. When you have proof of the truth, there's no need to worry about seeming arrogant because your confidence stems from an authentic place.”
To be confident without seeming arrogant, be a great listener, have open and honest dialogue with others, acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of others, and remember just how resilient you are!
