Your New Gym Is In The Backyard
If you're struggling to find your place in the gym, maybe you need to start with your backyard instead...
Research suggests that gardening offers moderate to vigorous physical activity for younger adults and low to moderate activity for older adults. It engages major muscle groups, improves mobility, and can be comparable to walking or Pilates in terms of workout intensity.
Gardening also burns calories, with an average of 330 calories per hour for a 154-pound person. Moreover, it has been linked to improved mood, stress reduction, and social interaction when practiced in communal gardens.
Some find gardening to be a meditative experience with tangible rewards. If you decide to give this a try, make sure to warm up by stretching and start with short gardening sessions. Add tasks like carrying watering cans and using push mowers for a challenge.
Instead of beating yourself up for failing at the gym, start with what you can (like gardening) and build momentum.
